Portuguese Timor 20 Escudos 1967

OBV: Régulo D. Aleixo

REV: Coat of arms of Portuguese Timor

Here is a Portuguese currency that was issued in Lisbon on the 24th of October 1967 for their distant overseas province of Timor. The territory is one of the poorest in the Portuguese Empire. The Chinese Timorese and many ordinary Portuguese referred to the Timorese escudo as "monkey money" as it was difficult to exchange them for other currencies. It bears the signature of Pedro de Mascarenhas Gaivão (Administrator) and Francisco José Vieira Machado (Governor). Printed by Bradbury Wilkinson & Co., Ltd. and authorised by Decree-Law Nos. 39221 and 44891.
